Abstract
"The Company CARTOX produces corrugated cardboard for packaging. This paper is about the analysis of the feasibility of modernizing a cardboard production line. The document includes both an economic and an engineering analysis, where the particular needs of the company were studied in order to make the best decision regarding implementation and operational viability. The corrugating machine that the company operates today has been more than forty years in service and its technology is out of date. This impairs productivity and lessens the quality of the products. The corrugating machines that the market of offers nowadays possess a technology that allows them to operate at higher speed and lower costs per unit, substantially lower than their predecessors. Moreover, the capacity of the machine is insufficient for the level of production of the company at present. In effect, the company has to outsource approximately 30% of the cardboard production. Therefore, the acquisition of a new machine will bring lower costs of production and increased production capacity, which in turn will allow the company the possibility to sell more cardboard and stop outsourcing. Having assessed the costs associated with the project, consisting of the investments in fix assets and working assets, and the expected income, which can be divided in four groups: savings from ending the outsourcing agreements, savings due to lower production costs, new sales of boxes and new sales of cardboard sheets, the conclusion is that this project is indeed profitable. The IRR of the project is 56%, and the NPV is USD 3,028,648."
