Abstract
"This thesis investigates the interaction between detonation waves inside a Rotating Detonation Engine in different transition phases. A step-by-step analysis of the flow field was done using an information flow method. Additionally, the influence of mesh refinement and chemical kinetics on a fixed set of initial boundary conditions was studied.
The results give an overview of the differences in values and physics of the detonation waves inside the rotating detonation engine and at the exit. Additionally, it shows the possibilities of GasFlow-MPI for Rotating Detonation Engine simulations. From these results, the high importance of the Meyer-Prandtl expansion fans, or cross-rotating pressure waves, regarding detonation wave stability and overall detonation wave geometry, including number, height, and length, is concluded.
The results are analyzed separately and together regarding the influence of up to five times mesh refinement and of seven and twenty one step chemical kinetics. As a conclusion, it is recommended that information flow analysis with fixed initial boundary conditions is carried out to understand the stability of detonation waves inside a Rotating Detonation Engine".
