“The objective of this thesis is to identify the best asset selection methodology in the domestic equity market in terms of risk exposure and expected returns according to the investor’s profile. Furthermore, the research addresses the possibility of obtaining investment returns in excess of the local market index by using the same assets that compose it. The study makes use of the Markowitz, CAPM, D-CAPM and APT models to study the historical returns of the set of stocks that composed the Merval index in the fourth quarter of 2009. The chosen methodology implied estimating, for each given model, the expected returns and the correlation of the chosen stocks in order to perform minimum variance optimization and obtaining the set of efficient portfolios. Four portfolios were chosen for each specific model used to embody the various risk aversion profiles. The chosen portfolio’s performance measurement was given by the quantification of their returns and standard deviation according to a buy and hold investment strategy in the year 2010, in comparison to the Merval index used as the benchmark. The empirical results showed that the Markowitz as well as CAPM models are not suitable to use in the presented form in the argentine equity market due to the inconsistencies between the expected returns and the levels of risk. On the other hand, the outcomes demonstrated that the APT model was the only one capable of constructing portfolios that presented increasing levels of return at increasing levels of risk, as well as performances in excess of the local market index. The main benefit of this investigation lies in providing small investors with the necessary tools and knowledge to invest in the local equity market, promoting awareness of the facilities given for such operations and the potential benefits that could be obtained. A greater incentive and development of the capital market will yield a greater conversion of savings into investment funds available for the issuing companies and thereby facilitating the access to capital”.
